Edema can have a wide range of causes but medical care should be sought immediately to both reduce current symptoms as well as potentially diagnose issues far more dangerous.

Edema occurs when blood vessels in your capillaries leak fluid. The fluid builds up in surrounding tissues causing swelling.

Mild cases of edema may result from:

  • Sitting or staying in one position for too long
  • Eating too much salty food
  • Premenstrual signs and symptoms
  • Pregnancy

Edema can be a side effect of some medications, including:

  • High blood pressure medications
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Steroid drugs
  • Estrogens
  • Certain diabetes medications

Edema may be a sign of a more serious underlying medical condition such as:

  • Congestive heart failure.
  • Cirrhosis
  • Kidney disease
  • Kidney damage
  • Weakness or damage to veins in your legs
  • Inadequate lymphatic system

In the United States alone varicose vein disease affects over 24 million people! It is very important to realize that varicose veins are a serious medical condition that only get worse with time. Untreated varicose veins get bigger and become painful. They can lead to dangerous blood clots that can cause a pulmonary embolism, heart attack, and even stroke.

When the valves in your veins are not working properly, the blood flows back up to your heart leaks downward and starts to accumulate in your leg veins causing tremendous pressure on the vein walls. When the walls of your leg veins start stretching because of the increased pressure, the veins bulge, causing a varicose vein.
