Varicose Veins Columbus – Polaris
Typically, the veins in your legs carry blood upward toward the heart, working against gravity. Tiny one-way valves inside the veins keep the blood moving in the right direction. When these valves weaken or stop working correctly, blood can leak backward and pool in the legs. This condition is called venous insufficiency.
This causes veins to become overloaded, which can lead to them bulging. The additional blood flow weighs down the leg, creating heaviness and fatigue when standing for long periods.
Many people will notice the appearance of varicose veins or experience symptoms, which can include swelling, itching, aching, and cramps. Often, legs feel achier at night than they do during the day.
Varicose veins can range from smaller bluish-green veins to large, worm-sized veins that seem to snake down the leg. Although larger veins tend to suggest significant disease, it is often the smaller veins that can display the onset of, or current presence of, a deeper, underlying problem.
You should see a vein specialist even if you have subtle symptoms such as prolonged leg pain, itching, and swelling. Some not-so-subtle symptoms include skin darkening, dryness, redness, and flakiness. Also, spontaneous bleeding after hot showers can be a sign of advanced venous disease and should prompt you to see a vein specialist.
Whether you have a known issue already, would like to get a second opinion, or are experiencing a condition that concerns you, the first step begins with thorough screening.
